Alpine Academy in review of the science of the Family-Learning plan.
In the late 1960's there was a collective initiative between the University of Kansas and the National Institute of Mental Health that set out to check the theory that adolescents and children found out finest in a family environment. This was the beginning of the practicing art of the Teaching-Family Model. All of it begins with the youth living in a house with a couple called family teachers that are trained to teach them the skills they searching for to achieve success. The first couple that was hired to do this was Lonnie and Elaine Phillips. Lonnie was a graduate student who had actually dealt with kids with developmental disabilities. Elaine was a preschool teacher. The Phillips moved into a home to live as a household with 6 kids that had been sent out there by the juvenile court system. It only took a few months for the testimonials to show the shifts that those boys were making. The children were being effective in school and were discovering how to interact with others and get their requirements satisfied because method rather than the unhealthy approaches they had actually used in the past. What truly showed the success of this model was that these kids were able to start returning house to their households and continuing to achieve success there. Years of extensive research study resulted in the facility of the art and science behind exactly what skills and techniques were being utilized by Lonnie and Elaine that were the secrets to the terrific success they were having. This research resulted in the advancement of the Teaching-Family Model. This design is a proven method for parents, teachers, and other family instructors to learn how to teach like Lonnie and Elaine. It is a generalized vehicle that can be used by anyone for all kinds of kids.
The abilities can be selected up and used by any individual. When people hear this they might have a tough time conceptualizing the simplicity of the vehicle.
The American Psychological Association has specified that the Teaching-Family Model is a proof based strategy to altering the lives of kids. See what they state here: http://www.apa.org/research/action/family.aspx
Treatment through the Teaching-Family Model is Strength-based, Trauma-informed, and Individualized. Alpine Academy utilizes the structure of the Teaching-Family Model to ensure consistency and collaboration in the Residential, Academic, and Clinical elements of treatment; it is engrained in everything that is done there. This partnership makes it possible for the treatment group at Alpine Academy to evaluate the needs and development of the students in much more than an arbitrary manner. There is real data to back it up. In the homes, family instructors are trained to teach like Lonnie and Elaine Phillips and provide the family-like setting that Dr. Wolf demonstrated was so important to the reliable development of the skills kids need to be successful. That information is tracked and examined on a routine basis to make sure the staff members are keeping the fidelity of the design. The school teachers integrate the framework of the Teaching-Family Model as they teach their curriculum by being included in specific skill advancement for each student's specific plan. In addition to their training in a wide range of healing modalities, Alpine Academy's specialists are also trained in the Teaching-Family Model to improve their capability to affect meaningful change and team up with all members of the treatment group. All of this causes a consistency that is so vital to the capability of the students to not only learn the abilities, however likewise generalize them to a range of environments and internalize their development. The Teaching-Family Model is the structure that allows Alpine Academy to empower the students to learn to impact weather change in their own lives and reinforce their household relationships.

Portrait Painting Done Right! My Favorite Artist www.perfectportraitpainting.com
Here is my review on how to get CUSTOM Portrait Paintings, Dog Painting, etc from photo:
1. Find the #1 Artist for quality at a reasonable price (link below for Utah Artist)
2. Review all current oil artwork and other media (digital oil etc) for quality and find out about cheap paintings commissioned, etc
3. Send a photo and get a free consultation – they are always willing to chat!
4. Check all reviews and testimonials, online tutorials, forums, etc to ensure 100% Satisfaction
Easiest thing would be to visit Emily Tjomsland’s website and see what she is up to. Her work is AMAZING and remarkable.
Emily’s art is one of a kind. Her gift for finding what is beautiful in people transforms a canvas into remarkable heirlooms. She cultivated her talent for realism via her academic and professional portrait painting experience.
She is best known for digital and oil painting mediums. Emily has been invited to Judge oil artwork at Arts Festivals and other competitions and she currently offers custom work from her studio in Utah.
Emily offers a variety of commissioned work including portrait paintings, digital art, book covers, etc.
OIL PAINTINGS & DIGITAL PAINTINGS
Our clients choose Emily primarily for Digital Oil Paintings and she is happy to also consult on oils.
There are some important differences. Digital oil is painted in Coral Painter with a tablet and the end product looks magnificent on stretched canvas. Our clients prefer digital portraiture because of the vibrant colors and ease of reproduction on canvas. It also allows for more accuracy and faster turnaround due to the ability to easily change inaccuracies. Emily ensures each client is fully satisfied with their portrait before she finishes it on canvas.
With traditional oils the finished canvas is slightly less vibrant because the more colors that are added the darker the painting and the “muddier” the painting tends to be. Conversely, the more color added to digital oil the more vibrant it becomes. Digital paintings are Emily’s primary love for so many reasons.
If you have not yet experienced the remarkable quality of a digital oil portrait painting we would highly recommend it.

Selling your Art Online - Website Tips For Artists
If you plan to sell your art online with your own unique website, my advice is simple: Be Different! There are hundreds of artist websites online today that are all making the same mistakes.
The first problem I would like to note, is the use of long multimedia presentations that artists are incorporating into their websites. I don't think there is anything more frustrating then arriving at a website and waiting for this huge multimedia presentation to download and play. The artist may think it's cool or adds something to their work, but in all actuality, it only frustrates impatient surfers. Not all Internet users have super fast cable or DSL connections. Many are still using dial up modems and if they have to wait for something to download, they will simply leave and visit your competition.
There are also sites that insist on putting unrelated banner ads or other unrelated advertising on their websites. Just the other day I was doing a search for original watercolor art. The first website I arrived at had a big banner at the top of the website advertising a dating site. I am not sure how dating is related to watercolors? This is simply a distraction and you are immediately sending visitors off your website. If you are going to advertise on your website, make sure it's related to the theme of your website and is helpful to your visitors. Do not make it the very first thing they see when they arrive at your home page.
You need to catch your visitor's attention right away. This means putting your most important information near the top of your website in plain view. Your goal is to draw your visitor into your site immediately with a compelling headline so that they stay long enough to check out what you have to offer. Once you draw them in with a good headline, you must then direct them to take an action. That could be to subscribe to your newsletter, or to check out your latest product(s).
Keep your site navigation consistent throughout your entire site. This means having the same navigation links in the same order on every page of your website. Your goal is to make it as easy as possible for your visitors to get from one place to the next, not to confuse them.
Make sure your visitors can easily contact you. Put a link to a contact page on every page of your site.
If you have testimonials, use them. Testimonials are awesome sales tools. People love to hear good reviews about a product or products they are about to purchase. It really does boost sales. If you have ever received testimonials from customers, highlight a few of them on your home page in clear view. If you do not have testimonials yet, contact people that have purchased from you in the past and ask if they could provide feedback on the product they purchased for inclusion on your website. Make sure they know how you plan to use their testimonial, and ask if you can site their name with the testimonial.
Start an opt-in newsletter. If you do not already have a method for collecting your visitors email addresses, then you may be losing sales. Many people who first come to your site will usually leave without making a purchase. It is important therefore to collect as many email addresses as possible so that you can follow up with your visitors. You could send out an announcement to your list of subscribers whenever you have a new piece for sale. If you regularly attend art or craft shows, you could send out an email and let your subscribers know when and where. You could also send out surveys or questionnaires to your list to get a better idea as to the type of products they are interested in purchasing.
Make certain that you have a variety of different payment options for your customers, especially payment by credit card. Studies have shown that sites, which accept credit card payments, have significantly more sales. Use a service like PayPal to accept credit cards from your website. It's free and easy to setup.
Make sure you have detailed purchasing and shipping instructions in place.
Have a good refund policy. When your customer receives your product, it may not be exactly what they anticipated. By having a good refund policy upfront, you will gain your customers trust and they will be more comfortable making a purchase, especially if they are parting with a lot of money.
Include a "Privacy Policy". Internet users are a paranoid bunch. People are still somewhat reluctant to part with personal information, so it is your job to make them feel at ease when they use your website. In a nutshell, a privacy policy clearly states what you do with users personal information. What kind of information do you collect from your visitors? What do you do with that information? Do you share it with anyone? If you are not sure how to create a privacy policy, visit the following website to access an easy to use Privacy Policy Generator: http://www.the-dma.org/privacy/creating.shtml
Include a "Terms of Use" section. This section outlines the terms and conditions for using your website. For instance, you probably want to restrict visitors from copying or reproducing the images on your website. You would put that in your Terms of Use section.
When adding images of your products, always use thumbnails that can be clicked to show a larger image, so that your pages download quickly. If the larger image is a big file, let the visitor know that they may have to wait for the picture to load.
Avoid putting traffic counters on your site. Counters make your site appear amateurish. If your site is fairly new, and your traffic is not yet established, you are broadcasting this to everyone that arrives at your site. If you need to track your website statistics, check with your hosting company. You may already have a good website statistics program included.
Choose a basic color scheme and only one or two different fonts. If you go overboard on color and use too many different fonts, your site will look out of balance and amateurish. Your website does not have to be a work of art. You are trying to sell your art, not your website.
Use a light background, preferably white, with dark text, preferably black. Don't use images or textures for your background. This makes it difficult for your visitor to read the text on your site.
Avoid adding music to your site. You may think it sounds nice to include your favorite songs when your page loads, but not everyone will agree. If they find the music annoying, they will leave.
Don't make your visitor have to scroll horizontally to view information on your website. Web surfers are lazy. Most hate to even scroll up and down let alone left and right.
Avoid animated graphics and scrolling or flashing text. This only distracts your visitors.
Put prices on all of your products. If people have to contact you to find out the price of something, they will more often than not leave and look elsewhere.
Make sure your site works in all the major browsers. The most popular browser today is Internet Explorer, but there are a good amount of surfers who use Netscape, Opera, and Firefox. Check out http://www.anybrowser.com/siteviewer.html. They have a great tool that enables you to see what your site looks like in various browsers.
Lastly, make your website personal. Speak to your visitors. Let them know who you are and what your art or craft is all about. Educate and enlighten. Include a step-by-step article or demonstration on how your work is created. If people have more of a connection with you and your art, they will be more comfortable buying from you.
I hope these website tips have helped. I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do. God Bless!
The Art Of Woodcut Prints
History of Woodcuts
No one knows the origin of woodcut prints, only that the cutting of an image into a wood plank, inking and printing that image onto another material, is the earliest known means used by artists to make multiple copies of works of art. Prior to that each creation stood as a unique and singular piece.
The oldest known dated print is a Buddhist scripture from A.D. 868. This is a fully realized reproduction. The intricacy of detail and skill of execution indicate a mastery of the technique and a long tradition. The Chinese, having invented paper around A.D. 105, used their early woodcuts to stamp and seal official writings. The wood cut was pressed into softened wax to create a seal or was then inked and pressed onto the paper. As the woodcuts became more detailed and expressive, the placing of the paper over an inked block was used to produce fine art prints. Woodcuts flourished in the East, but would have to wait until the first paper mills were built in Europe toward the end of the 14th century before becoming popular in the West. Artists like Albrecht DÜRER (1471-1528) started the western woodcut tradition and took the art of cutting and printing to new heights. The coming of paper to the West and the invention in Germany of moveable type by Johann GÜTENBERG (1395-1468) meant books. Books were perfect for woodcuts. The woodcuts could be made “type-high” and combined with moveable type to produce beautiful, illustrated books.
The Wood
The best wood for printing is medium soft planks. Such wood is both easy to cut and can still yield enough prints to justify drawing and cutting the block. The block itself is sawn lengthwise to the tree, planed and sanded smooth. Wood engravings require wood that has been cut across the tree. Engraving wood is scored and incised with tools called burins; woodcuts require chisels and knives. The “endgrain” blocks of the engraver are much harder than the planks used in woodcuts. Endgrain blocks are better suited to the fine lines and cross-hatching graphic techniques of engraving. They are also able to withstand many printings before going “blind”.
Artists traditionally prefer an even grain wood for woodcuts. Pear, cherry and basswood are ideal. The chisels are used both with and against the grain and wood planks with uniform grain yield predictable results.
Recently, supply is becoming a problem. Well seasoned suitable planks are becoming more difficult to find. Many artists have turned to buying drafting boards and cutting them up for the basswood. Others have altered their styles to accommodate the ragged edge left when wood with a more pronounced grain is cut against the grain. The wood plank also must be perfectly flat or it cannot be printed.
I have found a good supply of very flat planks with an extremely fine grain pattern that cuts well in either direction. By planing the planks, top and bottom to assure the printing and back sides are parallel, applying gesso to the cut surface and lightly sanding it smooth before cutting the wood, I can achieve the rich dense blacks that are the hallmark of my prints.
The Paper
The right paper captures the feelings and nuances of the block and adds a texture of its own. At one time, “rice papers” from Japan were thought to be the best; their absorbency, their ability to stand up well over time and their slight translucency, yielding outstanding results. The translucency also allowed the printer to see the ink through the back of the paper and make corrections where the image is light or missing. It is interesting to note that rice paper is not made from rice, but handmade from the inner bark of the mulberry tree.
I have used both Goya and Hosho rice papers, but now print exclusively on Arches heavyweight papers from France. The textures complement my blocks and archival quality is assured.
Printing The Block
Once the block is cut, proofed and corrected, it is secured, face up, onto the bed of the press. The press is then made ready. “Make-ready” is the process where the printer ensures that the entire surface of the block is in contact with the paper. The impression cylinder of the press is then wrapped with tympan paper. During make ready, this covering around the cylinder is opened and the actual surface of the cylinder is built up with thin papers and “Sphinx” paste to ensure that low spots on the block will print evenly. As added insurance and to help create a deeper impression, I place a sheet of acid-free tissue between the back of the paper to be printed and the paper on that wraps around the cylinder. Each print gets its own tissue which I later use to separate the prints.
Make ready completed, the ink is rolled up with a brayer and applied to the raised surface of the block. A single sheet of paper is placed, face down, on the inked block and the impression cylinder is rolled over the back of the paper. The image is then examined from the back to ensure it is complete and that the raised “embossing” is uniform. The print is then lifted from the block and laid on a rack to dry. Air drying is best, taking 2 to 3 days.
The Print
My favorite woodcut prints have the graphic power of strong drawings and capture the essential nature of the subject matter. Unlike wood engravings with their subtlety of tone and shade, the best woodcuts gain additional impact from their lack of middle values. Although artist have successfully used multiple blocks of the same image and/or colored paper to create color prints, I prefer the elemental and elegant look of a single block, rolled up with black ink and printed on a sheet of high-quality, heavyweight, unbleached watercolor paper.
